Gum Treatment

Gum treatment, often referred to as periodontal treatment, is a series of procedures designed to address and manage gum disease (periodontitis) and its precursor, gingivitis. Healthy gums are vital for maintaining overall oral health, as they provide a protective barrier around your teeth and support their stability. When gums become inflamed, infected, or recede due to poor oral hygiene or other factors, it can lead to tooth loss and other systemic health issues.

Types of Gum Treatment

  • Scaling : This procedure involves the removal of plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth and below the gumline. It is typically the first step in treating gum disease.
  • Root Planing : After scaling, the dentist smooths the root surfaces of the teeth to remove any rough areas where bacteria can accumulate, helping the gums to reattach to the teeth.

Surgical Treatments :

  • Flap Surgery (Pocket Reduction Surgery) : In cases of severe gum disease, this surgery involves lifting the gums back to remove tartar deposits in deep pockets, reducing the pocket size and ensuring that the gums can reattach to a clean surface.
  • Bone Grafts : If gum disease has destroyed the bone supporting the teeth, bone grafting procedures can help regenerate lost bone.
  • Soft Tissue Grafts : To counter gum recession, tissue from another part of the mouth (often the palate) is grafted onto the affected area to cover exposed roots and reinforce the gumline.
  • Guided Tissue Regeneration : This is used in conjunction with flap surgery when the bone supporting the teeth has been destroyed. It involves placing a small piece of mesh-like material between the bone and gum tissue to encourage bone and connective tissue to regrow.
